One thing I've noticed around the goals conversation this new year:
Assumptions.
Some folks seem to see goals as a kind of virtue signaling. More work. More expectations. More noise.
Others have monthly goals and couldn't be more fulfilled.
What's the difference?
For me, clarity around goals helps me stay focused on what I can control in the current moment. How I want to show up, and where I'll spend my time. Who I'm impacting and why.
I've been a big goals person for years. It's one of the key contributors to how I lost 100 pounds over the course of 18 months. They're a conversation driver in profitable organizations generating $10M+ in ARR, where I've contributed strategy and creative. And ever since I learned I'm autistic with ADHD, it makes sense (for me) why particular tools and supports help beyond belief.
And my '25 performance review with my kids? Outstanding.
Because goals.
(Ok, we'd never call our chats a performance review, but I had to roll with it. π
)
I'm sharing what I do and strategies that have worked for clients, for anyone who might like to know. Take it, share it, leave it; that's the great thing about ideas, they're a bit like bubbles. π«§
If I can share an observation: I think it's a mistake to assume someone isn't enjoying the work they've signed themselves up for, or that they're unprepared. Even if the goals seem big or busy, maybe that is an expression of exactly what they've prepared for; maybe it works beautifully for them.
My public goals are commitments of work you will see. My private goals like losing 100 pounds happen behind-the-scenes, over the course of years, with proper medical support.
I'll write more about goals in the future, because it's been a truly transformative practice, something further reinforced in my time with the Small Giants Leadership Academy and during executive coaching.
